Growing up, I repeatedly hear the whir of my Nana’s antique sewing machine. Though it seemed really ancient, it was attractive and stylish. My grandmother pointed out that she got the sewing machine from her Aunt who trained her how to use the mechanism. Everyday, she always seemed to have sewing work ranging from pillows and curtains to attire. Sometimes, I would also see my mother give granny’s antique sewing machine a whirl. Together, they made several gorgeous designs that I have always treasured until this day.
When my parents passed away, I inherited almost everything including my dear grandmother’s wonderful singer sewing machine parts. I was so amazed at how gorgeous it still looks. And the most amazing thing about it is that it works flawlessly although slow. Thankfully, my mother had a knack for keeping valuables undamaged and maintained.
One day while I was surfing the internet, I came across a photograph of the vintage sewing machines that looked like the one I inherited from my grandmother. It turns out that I possess an antique sewing machine from Singer. The particular model that I have was called The Family or more famously known as The Turtleback. A uncommon piece, the Turtleback has been hunted by many antique collectors who are willing to shell out huge amount for it. Because of my surprising discovery, I loved my antique sewing machine even more. Eventually I became addicted into researching more data about various antique sewing machines that made a difference in the textile industry as well as in the lives of millions of households. By then my attraction for these wonderful machines increased and I started collecting earlier pieces of sewing machines as well.
After countless swap meets, garage sales, and online auctions later, I have bought several antique sewing machines that are truly coveted of most antique collectors. What’s so great about my acquirement’s are that they are for the most part in perfect shape. Though some of them could do with a bit of maintenance, my antique sewing machines look beautiful.
